Beating the Odds – Frank Brown

You won’t want to miss the opportunity to welcome Frank Brown home to our BE community and celebrate his journey and a life that reflects the heart of Bishop England High School. This is the true story of Charleston local, Frank Brown beating the odds and paying the gift of opportunity forward.

Please join us as BE Alumni ’91 and this year’s Commencement Speaker, Frank Brown premiers his documentary, “Beating the Odds”. This powerful and inspirational film will take you through the journey of Frank’s education here at BE and through USC Law School. Frank is now the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), at Communities In Schools of Atlanta, using his gifts to bring opportunity to others beat the odds.

 

Frank Brown’s Biography

Since August 2014, Frank Brown has been CEO of Communities In Schools of Atlanta, leading the organization’s mission to surround students with a community of support; empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. During the 2018 – 2019 academic school year, CIS of Atlanta had a presence at 65 schools spanning four metro-Atlanta school systems – Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County.

Under Brown’s leadership, CIS of Atlanta has invested in innovative new programs and partnered with private corporations and other nonprofits to increase its impact. Such new partnerships and programs include CIS of Atlanta partnering with the Multi-Agency Alliance for Children (MAAC) and receiving he 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) grant from the Georgia Department of Education to respectively support youth in foster care and open the Real World Academy after school STEM program. Also, under Brown’s leadership CIS of Atlanta’s staff has expanded from 18 to over 100 employees under the largest board approved operating budget to date to serve additional students in more schools and districts (most recently Clayton County). Such positive impacts have also been recognized by organizations, such as the United Way of Greater Atlanta, that awarded Communities In Schools of Atlanta with the 2018 Mark O’Connell Community Impact Award for showcasing an above-and-beyond commitment to improving Child Well Being throughout greater Atlanta.

In 2019, Atlanta Magazine recognized Brown as one of Atlanta’s most powerful education leaders. Brown is also a graduate of Leadership Atlanta, Class of 2019.

Brown serves on the board of directors for Atlanta Partners For Education (AFPE).

A graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, Brown majored in history and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Brown, the proud father of three sons, currently resides in Atlanta GA and enjoys yoga.
