Passionate about the important role that Catholic education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty and closing the achievement gap for poor and minority youth, Tim and Mary Hayes, in partnership with Bishop England High School, created the The Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (AMDG) Scholarship in 2020.  St. Ignatius coined the phrase which became the motto for the whole Jesuit community: “ad majorem Dei gloriam” meaning “to the greater glory of God!”, a  prayer that God would be glorified by their every action, and that others would be attracted to the goodness of God because of their actions.  This scholarship provides transformational support for a student to attend Bishop England High School for four years and ensures that the student has access to resources they need to be successful in an inclusive, academically challenging environment, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

The BE Alumni Scholarship is made possible by the generosity of Bishop England alumni who take great pride in being a Bishop and are inspired to pay forward for future generations of young men and women seeking a Bishop England High School education. Established by the Griffith Family in memory of Bette Griffith ’52. who was a strong and beautiful member of our BE and Charleston community. Bette’s devotion to her faith is one of the hallmarks of her legacy, and it is properly acknowledged with the establishment of this award. A $1,000 is given annually to a current BE student who exemplifies his/her life as a strong practicing Catholic, a life style Bette embodied.

Established by Mr. Charles and Mrs. Mary Ellen Way, Jr., this award is given in memory of Charles S. "C" Way, III to a well-rounded rising senior with a zest for life. C enjoyed his years at Bishop England to the fullest and earned varsity letters in football and wrestling. While academic performance was important, C's desire was to always have the full experience. The Chicco-Kaiser Family Award, funded by the Chicco-Kaiser family, honors the memory of Vincent J. Chicco, Bob and Ursula Kaiser, Amanda Jahnz Kaiser ’00, and Patrick Clarkin ’03. Leonard Walter Piccirillo entered into eternal rest on August 24, 2020.  In his loving memory, his eldest sister Nanette Piccirillo ‘76, along with the support of Lenny’s many close family and friends, established this scholarship in hopes that his legacy as a kind soul and gentle spirit will live on through future generations of BE students.  In addition to being a bright light in many people’s lives while at BE, Lenny was an exceptional football player on the varsity team for three years and designated as “Best Offensive Lineman” as a senior. Established in memory of Daniel J. ’30 and Evelyn P. Established by Monsignor Robert J. Kelly and supported by his family and friends, this annual scholarship provides financial assistance to help a student at Bishop England High School. Father Kelly was a faculty member at BE from 1959 to 1974 and vice rector for several years. He became a rector of Bishop England in 1964 a postion he held until 1990. He was a teacher, principal and friend to generation after generation of students that have come through BE. Father Kelly could be found at every sporting event cheering on the students and the sports he loved so dearly. Established by Walter V. Duane ’39 this business award honors his sister, Genevieve Duane ’35. The Duanes, parents of a strong Bishop England family, saw their nine children graduate from our institution with Genevieve being the seventh of the nine. Known for her business acumen and deep religious faith, she worked successfully in the community exhibiting strong moral character and work ethic. Established by the family of George J. F. Bullwinkel, Sr., this fund is used for the purpose of awarding scholarships to students who may not otherwise be able to attend Bishop England. Mr. Bullwinkel demonstrated his support of BE in many ways until the time of his death in July 1999. The Grace O'Keefe Scholarship was established by the Dale M Slater Charitable Fund III, a Donor Advised Fund of The US Charitable Gift Trust. Established by family and friends to honor and memorialize Joseph Condon, Jr. ’69, “Iron Joe” who lost his battle to cancer in 2016. Joe always wanted to help fund tuition for a Catholic student to attend Bishop England. This scholarship is awarded yearly to a deserving student who wishes to attend BEHS but can not afford to do so. Give to this fund.

Established by James ’61 and Bunny Kerr this fund is used to provide grants to Bishop England for students in need of financial assistance to attend BEHS. Mr. and Mrs. Kerr established a separate endowment, The Kerr Family Scholarship Fund, with the Citadel Foundation to provide funds to support a scholarship to a cadet of the Catholic faith from Charleston County who is a business major, with average grades or above, who has displayed leadership and extra curricular activities, and who has demonstrated financial need. Established in memory of John and Virginia Meeks by their daughter Virginia “Ginger” Meeks ‘ 62 to be awarded to a student in need of financial assistance. Give to this fund.

Katherine graduated from Bishop England in 2012. She was a member of the National Honor Society and exceled in volleyball during her time at BEHS. Following her high school graduation, she attended Emerson College where she competed in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament with her teammates. Friends and teachers remember Katherine’s vivacious spirit and limitless creativity. She lived each day according to the ‘Golden Rule’ and dedicated her life to helping those in need. She was a student at the Charleston School of Law and a law office intern when she unexpectedly passed away in March 2022. In her loving memory, her family established the Katherine Adele “Kat” Westbrook Tuition Assistance Fund to generously provide tuition assistance for current students.

Passionate about the important role that high quality, inclusive education plays in the formation of young people living with physical and mental disabilities, Robert and Lois Abel were inspired to establish the Mark Abele Memorial Tuition Assistance Fund in honor of their beloved son Mark who passed away at the age of 33. Mark attended Bishop England High School from 1970 – 1972 while struggling with numerous health complications due to hemophilia disease. The Abele family was deeply touched by the support Mark received from faculty and staff to ensure he was able to keep learning and have as normal of a high school experience as possible despite suffering from an incredibly rare condition. The Abele’s established this fund to honor Mark’s life and pay forward the gift of Catholic education for other families experiencing similar health challenges.

The Marlowe Moxley Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship given by members of the Moxley family in memory of their beloved daughter and niece, Marlowe Marie Moxley, Class of 2020. Marlowe was a member of the Bishop England cheerleading squad and thoroughly enjoyed cheering on the Battling Bishops during her time as a student. A friend to all, Marlowe was known for her compassionate nature, her infectious laugh, and her unwavering loyalty to her friends and family. She approached life with empathy, kindness, and a deep sense of humor that made those around her feel seen, valued, and loved. Established by Chuck and Marie Marquardt in memory of their daughter, Mary Marquardt, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who, having faced adversity, turned to God to get through and found the benefit in their struggle. Additionally, they are caring of others, respected by peers, involved in extracurricular activities they are truly passionate about, not afraid to do the right thing and humble about their qualities.  Give to this fund.

Russell William McLaughlin, a 2019 Bishop England graduate and captain of the soccer team, entered into eternal rest on May 5, 2020.  This scholarship was established to memorialize his legacy as a teammate and leader, both on and off the soccer field. Funds awarded in Russell’s memory will support a Bishop England student who similarly demonstrates hard work, a positive attitude, and an altruistic spirit. Give to this fund.

Established by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy to provide scholarships for deserving Catholic students to have and equal opportunity for an education at Bishop England High School. The Sisters of Charity is the namesake of our campus chapel, in honor of their dedication to serving the poor, sick, orphaned, and uneducated in the Diocese of Charleston. When their religious community was incorporated in Charleston in 1835, they established and operated numerous educational and medical institutions, including a school for children of free blacks. Given to a high school senior who has shown strong interest in art and a desire to pursue art after high school. Through an application process, the winner will be a student who demonstrates: notable progress as an artist in both art technique and overall craftsmanship; development as an artist during high school; and strong communication of meaning in their artwork. This fund was established in memory of Joseph F. '71 and Catherine Cahill's son, Chris '99, who was tragically killed in a car accident while attending Furman University. This scholarship benefits BE students who plan to attend Furman University. At his death in 1976, a scholarship fund was established in the name of Monsignor John L. Manning. Father Manning spent his 49 year career with the Catholic Diocese of Charleston including as a teacher at BE. During his sophomore year at Bishop England, Steve Kramer was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to eventually be flown back and forth to California to receive treatments. During this time, Steve would still ask for his assignments and make test arrangements. He had such a desire to learn. The scholarship was founded by a group of BE National Honor Society students who were very close to Steve and his brother Chuck Kramer '83. These students drew up the guidelines upon permission from Mr. and Mrs. Kramer. The BE members of the NHS are responsible for raising a portion of the funds awarded. The parents of Steve Kramer, Theodore and Dorothy, generously contribute to this fund above and beyond what Bishop England NHS raises. Give to this fund.

The Suzanne Doscher Endowed Nursing Scholarship is to provide a scholarship award to one Bishop England High School graduate annually who is enrolling in a bachelor or associate degree nursing program upon high school graduation.

The selection of the recipient by the Bishop England High School administration shall give preference to a student who, in addition to studying nursing, also meets one or more of the following criteria:

• In financial need to attend college;
• From a single parent household;
• Attended BEHS for 4 years )or is a military dependent and attended for less than 4 years); and
• Is enrolling in a Catholic college or university nursing program

Established in memory of William Cheney Moore, IV '90 by his parents, William C. and Ann R. Moore. William was a good student and athlete while at Bishop England and went on to college to pursue both. He was diagnosed with cancer while in college. Established in 1995 by the late Mrs. Juanita Brown in memory of her husband, W. Melvin Brown.
