Academic Overview
Learning Support Program & Accommodations
Inspired by our belief in the dignity of every student and informed by contemporary scientific insights into brain function and Bishop England strives to make learning accessible to every student, despite learning ability. We understand that conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia, and dyscalculia cause challenges in the learning process. Therefore, the Learning Support Program was designed to equip students, who experience difficulties in learning, with the tools and strategies they need to reach their maximum potential. Through individualized plans, our team provides support in three main ways: Accommodation Plans, Consultations, and a Learning Lab.
Funding:
For those students who are registered for our Options Program or who qualify for accommodations based on a diagnosis from a psycho-educational evaluation completed by a certified professional, there is a state funded program to assist families in tuition cost called Exceptional SC. Please use this link to read more about the program and possible funding for school: ExceptionalSC. We encourage you to sign up for its newsletters to be informed of deadlines and updated information.
Bishop England High School runs on a semester system.
Each semester culminates in a week of exams: mid-term exams in December and final exams in May. The school day begins at 8:05 am each morning with dismissal at 2:50 pm. On Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays classes meet each day for 45 minutes and rotate in a seven week cycle each Monday morning. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays classes meet for extended periods of 70 minutes with a 45-minute Flex period in the middle of the day before lunch. Tuesdays include Mass and 3 70-minute classes, and Wednesdays have 4 70-minute classes.

AP Program
The Honors and AP program is designed to challenge gifted students. As part of the Honors Program, Bishop England participates in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) and offers 16 AP courses. Because the Honors program and AP curricula require such intense study, students selected for this program must demonstrate maturity, learn at an accelerated pace, and review/complete assignments with a high degree of independence. They are expected to be capable of writing well-organized, analytical essays and to apply information in a way that goes beyond basic comprehension of the facts. They should be able to evaluate and synthesize information as well.
We are pleased to report that our students taking AP exams in the 2023-24 school year had an 93% pass rate with scores of 3, 4 or 5. Seventy-three percent of those students passing the AP exam scored a 4 or 5.
Advanced Placement courses can result in college credits upon passing a course’s AP exam.
