Gold Level Service Award – Ms.Kit Brownell ’81

Ms.Kit Brownell ’81, our Director of Admissions has already accomplished Gold Level for service this school year with 142 hours!

Gold level means that a student or faculty member has done at least 100 hours of service.

Ms.Brownell volunteers at Camp Happy Days every Summer. Camp Happy Days offers support and encouragement to children diagnosed with cancer and their families by providing cost-free year-round programs, special events and access to crisis resources. Their goal is to improve the physical, emotional and psychological health of the entire family facing pediatric cancer. Last Summer the theme at Camp Happy Days was, “Let Your Sparkle Shine!”, where Ms.Brownell and the other volunteers dressed up for the little girls’ luncheon celebrating ferries, unicorns and mermaids.

Last year more than 300 children and their families were able to participate in summer camp and 12 year-round programs at no cost. For more information on volunteer opportunities click here and to make a donation click here.

Joey Benton – 245 hours

Joey volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Sweet Escape, at both the Travelers Rest and Midlands camps. It’s a camp for kids with diabetes, since it’s hard for them to attend other camps due to their health concerns. For Joey, it was a challenge for him to stay up late helping the kids with their blood checks every night. But, he loved spending time with the kids and making personal connections with others there. He learned that even though there were limits to what he could do physically, due to his own health concerns, he found other ways to contribute. Every individual brought different strengths and talents and that’s what made the camp work so well. He hopes that others at BE will find a cause they really care about!
