Congratulations, Dr. Lisa Hellstrom!

Beloved Biology Teacher of 28 years Retires

2021 Teacher of the Year

We are grateful for the 28 years Dr. Hellstrom has been teaching at BE! Dr. Hellstrom started teaching at BE in 1995 and has generations of BE students. We appreciate the love and dedication she has given her students over the years.

Dr. Lisa Hellstrom has served as organist for our choir and played the keyboard for us at our all-school Masses. We’ve been blessed that she has so generously shared her incredible talent with us, as that talent has graced our liturgies and made our celebrations somehow holier and more radiant with joyful noise – even in a gymnasium!

Our BE community shares a heart-felt appreciation for all Dr. Hellstrom has done for our school community. She is authentically passionate about teaching and truly wants the absolute best for her students. She is a consummate professional and is devoted to her craft. The students, faculty, and staff of Bishop England have been the beneficiaries of her years of loyalty, her immense intellect, and her willingness to share her gifts with those around her. We sincerely thank Dr. Hellstrom for all that she has done for our community. We will miss her dearly and will think of you often with love – always mindful that every day is a great day for Biology!!

100% Pass in AP Biology – Lunchtime Social 2022

How many years have you been teaching at BE?

I have been teaching here since the fall of 1995 – Unbelievable! So this year was my 28th year.

What are your retirement plans?

I am mainly leaving to relocate to Maryland, where my family is. Everyone is getting older, and I need to be closer to them. I love BE – the only thing is that it’s not in MD! I can see myself doing some tutoring or teaching or subbing. I still love Biology, and AP Biology is hard anywhere, so maybe I can get involved in a Catholic school there.

What will you miss the most about teaching at BE?

As I mentioned before, I love BE. What a blessing it has been – a true gift from God for me to end up here. I will miss many things – the friends on the faculty and staff, the students, especially those excited about learning something new in Biology. I will miss the beautiful campus and view outside my classroom window! I will even miss writing notes on my TV!

What is a favorite memory at BE?

I think I will remember most the dedication shown on the part of every single faculty and staff member – everyone is dedicated to the formation and education of our young people that move through here. So much of what the faculty and administrators do is founded on what is best for the students. Everyone displays Catholic values and serves as a role model, enhancing the learning and teaching experiences.

It’s always wonderful when students come back and tell me what an easy time they had in college Biology because of being in AP Biology here. As far as a specific memory – I don’t think I can narrow it down. High up there on my list of best memories would be John England Days, working with the music program, and spirit days.

It’s so hard to pick just one memory because, as you know,
It’s always a great day for Biology!
